Periodontics
at Dentalcare BerinsfieldWhat is Periodontics?
Periodontics is the area of dentistry which looks after the areas surrounding the teeth and the diseases which affect them. A lot of the time this will consist of gums and specifically, gum disease, but periodontists will also look after the jaw bone and the areas which connect the tooth to the jaw bone. At Dentalcare Berinsfield, our periodontists are also highly qualified in the area of dental implants which is where a metal cylinder is inserted into the gum and this acts as a new tooth root with a crown placed on top to replace missing teeth.
What can be treated?
Here are some of the conditions that a periodontist will treat at Berinsfield:
Gingivitis
When plaque builds up on your teeth and isn’t treated, it can become more problematic. Gingivitis is the inflammation of the gums which can become red and painful.
Periodontitis
If left untreated, gingivitis can develop into periodontitis. The gums pull away from the from the tooth which develops into pockets containing bacteria. These pockets can become inflamed and infected.
Periodontists are also experts in replacing missing teeth. They can help with:
- Dental implants
- Gum graft surgery
- Regenerative procedures
- Dental crown lengthening
- Plastic surgery procedures

Periodontal treatment
Our main form of treatment is preventative. We work with you to develop a good oral hygiene that will prevent periodontitis.
Once diagnosed with a form of gum disease our initial treatment will take the form of a thorough clean of your teeth and gums. After this, treatment can become more complex with possible minor surgery such as gum grafting to correct issues with the gums.
